Brown Tail Moth - The Problem
The caterpillars will eat almost any type of tree or bush, although they have a preference for hawthorn or blackberry. The caterpillar releases irritant hairs into the air which can cause a painful skin irritation, and can affect some people badly.
We have experience in removing the tents which the caterpillars return to in the evenings, as well as applying chemical to eradicate the caterpillars. This is a problem best treated upon identification, as the problem can quickly spread leading to infestation across a wide area.
Leatherjackets & Chafer Grubs - The problem
If a Crane Fly (Daddy-long-legs) lays its eggs onto a lawn and the eggs hatch, the resultant larvae are referred to as Leatherjackets. The recent warm, damp autumns and winters have favoured leatherjackets, so it is important to be on the lookout from late August and be prepared to act.
The leatherjackets, and similarly the larvae of Chafer beetle live in the soil just below the grass and eat the grass roots and stems. The result is little grass root growth which, in turn, leads to poorly grassed areas and eventually bare patches.
Whilst it is possible to dig out the larvae by hand, this is a slow and labour intensive solution. A faster and more cost-effective solution is the application of an insecticide to kill the grubs. This needs to be carefully timed - the insecticide works on the grubs, not on the eggs, and so the eggs need to have hatched before any application.
Whilst leatherjackets are only a problem in autumn, Chafer grubs live in the soil for up to three years, and therefore applications of insecticide can be required at anytime during the summer.
A treatment for leatherjackets is often combined with a preventative worm cast treatment.
